Accident – Death – Obituary News :

NEW YORK (AP) — Shocking video footage released late Saturday captured the moment when an officer in upstate New York fatally shot a 13-year-old boy. The incident occurred after the teen had been tackled to the ground following a chase with the police. The boy had pointed a replica handgun at the officers, prompting the fatal shot.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The tragic event unfolded late Friday in Utica, a city located approximately 240 miles northwest of Manhattan. Officers stopped two youths for questioning a little after 10 p.m. One of the youths attempted to flee and brandished what appeared to be a real handgun at the pursuing officers.

In response, the police department in Utica released body camera footage of the incident in response to public outcry. The state attorney general will lead the investigation into the shooting to determine its justification.

Victim identified as Nyah Mway

The 13-year-old boy has been identified in local media reports as Nyah Mway, a Karen refugee born in Myanmar. Nyah was an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School. Lt. Michael Curley confirmed the victim’s identity on Saturday.

Utica, a city with over 65,000 residents along the Mohawk River, is home to a significant population of more than 4,200 individuals from Myanmar, according to The Center, a nonprofit organization that aids in refugee resettlement.

Background on Karen Refugees

Karens, an ethnic minority group, are among those in conflict with the military regime in Myanmar. The army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, sparking widespread protests for the restoration of democracy.

The tragic shooting has sparked anger and unrest in the community. The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending further investigation.

Police Response and Investigations

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams stated that the replica handgun carried by Nyah closely resembled a real firearm, complete with Glock markings and serial numbers. However, the weapon only fires pellets or BBs.

Williams emphasized that the bystander video circulating on social media does not capture the full context of the event. The police department is conducting an internal investigation to ensure that officers followed proper protocols and training.

The state attorney general’s office will also conduct an independent inquiry to determine the justification of the shooting. Williams expressed his condolences to Nyah Mway’s family and acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident.
