Nyah Mway : “NY AG probes Utica teen death”

Following the tragic shooting of 13-year-old Nyah Mway by Utica Police Department officers on Friday night, the office of New York Attorney General Tish James has initiated an investigation in accordance with state law.

Incident Details

Authorities reported that officers approached Mway and another juvenile on Shaw Street, suspecting them to be involved in recent robberies. Mway allegedly attempted to flee and pointed a replica Glock pellet gun at officers, leading to the fatal shooting.

Transparency Pledge

In a bid for transparency, the Utica Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident. Bodycam footage and photos of the pellet gun have been released to the public.

Officer Identities

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been identified as Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the UPD. Other officers involved were Bryce Patterson, a four-year veteran, and Andrew Citriniti, a two-and-a-half-year veteran previously with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Police Chief’s Statement

Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed sorrow over the event, labelling it as both tragic and traumatic. He assured cooperation with the city’s Public Safety Advisory Committee in the aftermath of the incident.

Community Response

Following the shooting, protesters gathered outside the Utica police department on Saturday night, demanding justice and accountability in the handling of the case.
