Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident unfolded in Utica, New York, as a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer after running from authorities while carrying a replica handgun. The incident occurred a little after 10 p.m. on Friday, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to police reports, officers in Utica stopped two youths, both 13 years old, in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The teens matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident. One of the teens, identified as Nyah Mway, was also in violation of state traffic laws by walking in the road.

Body camera footage released by the police captured the moment Nyah Mway ran from the officers and was pursued by them. In a tense moment, Nyah Mway appeared to point the replica handgun at the officers, prompting one of them to fire a single shot that tragically struck the boy in the chest.

The replica handgun carried by Nyah Mway was later identified as a realistic-looking Glock 17 Gen 5 replica, which only fires pellets or BBs. Despite the initial belief by officers that it was a real firearm, further investigation revealed it to be a non-lethal replica.

Following the shooting, Nyah Mway was given immediate first aid by the officers and transported to Wynn Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about police procedures and use of force.

Police Face Scrutiny Over Response

The officer who fired the fatal shot, identified as Patrick Husnay, along with Officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation. The body camera footage of the incident showed a chaotic scene with bystanders screaming at the police as the events unfolded.

During a public safety statement, Husnay stated that he fired one round towards the ground in response to the perceived threat from Nyah Mway. The police department has come under intense scrutiny as the community demands answers and justice for the tragic loss of the young boy.

Nyah Mway, described as an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority. The shooting has deeply affected the community, particularly the refugee population in Utica.

The Karen ethnic minority has faced persecution and conflict in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and many have sought refuge in the United States. The tragic death of Nyah Mway has underscored the challenges faced by minority communities and the need for greater understanding and support.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

As the investigation into the shooting continues, there have been calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of the case. The Utica Police Department is conducting an internal investigation to determine if officers followed protocols and training in their response to the incident.

Additionally, the state attorney general will open a separate case to assess the justification of the shooting and ensure that justice is served. The community, including Nyah Mway’s family and supporters, is seeking answers and assurances that such a tragedy will not be repeated.

In a statement, Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed condolences to the family of Nyah Mway and acknowledged the pain and trauma caused by the incident. The community remains on edge as they await the outcome of the investigations and hope for a fair and just resolution.

The shooting in Utica has reignited discussions about police conduct and use of force, prompting a reexamination of law enforcement practices and the need for better communication and engagement with the community.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, there is a collective call for healing, understanding, and unity to address the underlying issues that led to the loss of a young life.
