A tragic incident unfolded in Utica, upstate New York, as a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer after fleeing from authorities while carrying a replica handgun. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday, when officers stopped two youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation in the city, located approximately 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.

Body camera footage released by the police shows the moment Nyah Mway allegedly pointed the replica gun at the pursuing officers. Despite the officers’ belief that it was a real handgun, it was later confirmed to be a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 with a detachable magazine.

During a struggle on the ground, one of the officers fired a single shot that tragically struck the boy in the chest. Despite immediate first aid efforts by the officers and transportation to Wynn Hospital, Nyah Mway succumbed to his injuries.

Lt. Michael Curley, a police spokesperson, described the replica gun as “a realistic appearing firearm with GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers, but ultimately fires only pellets or BB’s.”

An onlooker’s video shared on Facebook depicts the officer chasing Nyah Mway, tackling him, and subsequently firing the fatal shot. Officer Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran, was identified as the shooter and, along with two other officers, was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Following the incident, the Utica community was rocked by the shooting, particularly as details emerged about Nyah Mway’s background. Reports indicate that he was a refugee from Myanmar, a member of the Karen ethnic minority, and an 8th-grade student at Donovan Middle School.

The shooting has sparked outrage and demands for justice, with the police department launching an internal investigation into the officers’ actions. The state attorney general will also conduct a separate inquiry to determine the justification of the shooting.
