Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Relatives of a 13-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a police shooting in central New York are demanding justice as they seek accountability from local officials. The incident has sparked outrage within the immigrant community from Myanmar, where the boy and his family originate.

Investigations Underway

The state attorney general is currently investigating the shooting of Nyah Mway, who was tackled to the ground and fatally shot by Utica police after a foot chase on Friday. Police have also launched their own probe into the incident.

Community Demands Answers

Amidst official investigations, Nyah Mway’s family and community members are demanding accountability for the death of the teenager, who was born in Myanmar and belongs to the Karen ethnic minority. Residents of Karen descent in Utica are planning to meet with Mayor Michael P. Galime to seek answers and justice.

Outcry at Vigil

At a vigil held on Saturday night, Nyah Mway’s brother, Lah, expressed his desire for the officers involved to face consequences for their actions. Others present at the vigil questioned the official account of the shooting, stating that it did not add up.

Body Camera Footage

According to police reports, Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old boy were stopped due to fitting the description of suspects in an armed robbery. The body camera footage shows Nyah Mway running away and appearing to point a black object at the officers, which was later revealed to be a BB gun that resembled a real firearm.

Officer Action

Officer Bryce Patterson pursued Nyah Mway, tackled him, and engaged in a physical altercation. Officer Patrick Husnay then fired a single shot that struck the teenager in the chest. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.

Community Background

Utica, with a population of over 65,000, is home to a significant number of people from Myanmar, particularly the Karen ethnic group. The Karens have been involved in conflicts with the military regime in Myanmar, which seized power from the democratically elected government in 2021.

Seeking Refuge in the US

Nyah Mway and his family immigrated to the United States nine years ago, seeking refuge from the political unrest in Myanmar. The tragic incident has raised questions about the safety and security of immigrant communities in the US.
