Tragically, by Friday night, the 13-year-old was shot and killed by police officers following a foot chase in which he allegedly pointed a BB gun at them.

His devastated relatives and members of the immigrant community are demanding justice for Nyah and accountability for the police officers involved in the shooting.

Seeking Justice for Nyah

Nyah’s cousin, Lay Htoo, expressed the family’s shock and grief, stating, “We came to the United States seeking a peaceful life and better opportunities. Instead of celebrating his graduation to high school, we are now mourning his tragic death.”

The incident has sparked outrage among the local Karen ethnic minority community from Myanmar, with calls for a thorough investigation and legal action against the officers responsible.

Community Meeting with Mayor

Members of the Karen community, along with Nyah’s relatives, are scheduled to meet with Utica Mayor Michael P. Galime to address the shooting and ensure that justice is served.

Background on Utica and Refugee Population

The shooting took place in Utica, a city that has seen an influx of refugees from various countries, including over 4,200 individuals from Myanmar. The diverse population has contributed to the city’s revival in recent years.

According to police reports, Nyah and another teenager were stopped based on suspicion of involvement in an armed robbery. The encounter escalated when Nyah fled and allegedly pointed a BB gun at the officers.

Controversy Surrounding the Shooting

Body camera footage revealed the sequence of events leading to Nyah’s death, showing the officers’ response to what they believed was a real handgun. The tragic misunderstanding resulted in Nyah being fatally shot in the chest.

Community members and Nyah’s cousin, Isabella Moo, have raised concerns about the use of force by the police and are calling for better training to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Family Background and Tragic Loss

Nyah’s family fled Myanmar to Thailand before resettling in the United States nearly a decade ago. Described as a bright and caring teenager, Nyah enjoyed mathematics, soccer, and spending time with friends.

His sudden and tragic death has left his family in mourning, with Nyah’s mother unable to sleep and consumed by grief since the heartbreaking incident.
