Shocking video footage released late on Saturday has revealed a tragic incident in Utica, upstate New York, where a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer. The incident occurred a little after 10pm on Friday, following an armed robbery investigation in the city.

According to the police, the officers stopped two youths, both 13 years old, who matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects. One of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, attempted to flee from the officers and was tackled to the ground. Despite officers initially believing that the weapon was a real handgun, it was later confirmed to be a replica of a Glock 17 Gen5 with a detachable magazine that only fires pellets or BBs. The officers involved in the incident were Bryce Patterson, Andrew Citriniti, and the officer who fired the fatal shot, Patrick Husnay.

Chaotic Scene Captured on Body Camera

The body camera footage released by the police department captured a chaotic and tense situation. Nyah Mway can be seen pointing the replica handgun at the officers while attempting to flee. The officers can be heard shouting to each other as they run, with Patterson eventually tackling Nyah Mway to the ground.

As the two struggle on the ground, Husnay fires a single shot that tragically strikes Nyah Mway in the chest. The officers immediately administered first aid to the teen and rushed him to Wynn Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Community Outcry and Investigation

The release of the body camera footage sparked a public outcry in Utica, a city with a population of 65,000 that is home to a significant number of refugees, including Nyah Mway, who was born in Myanmar and belonged to the Karen ethnic minority.

The police department has launched an internal investigation to determine if the officers followed proper protocols and training during the incident. Additionally, the state attorney general will open its own case to assess the justification of the shooting.

At a tense news conference, Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to the family of Nyah Mway, acknowledging the tragedy of the situation. The community, including the youth’s family, was present at the event, which ended prematurely due to repeated outbursts from the audience.
