Child’s demise sparks suspension of official.
Accident – Death – Obituary News : Berhampur: The Kandhamal administration took action on Friday by suspending an assistant superintendent at a residential school in Budrukia, Baliguda block, following the tragic death of a seven-year-old hostel inmate on Wednesday.
“Nakhetramala Sahu, the assistant superintendent of the hostel, has been suspended for alleged negligence in admitting the child to the hospital after she was diagnosed with malaria,” stated Ashish Ishwar Patil, the Kandhamal collector.
The young victim was identified as Mita Mallick, a second-grade student at the school located in Sarukoi village. According to Rabindra Mishra, the district welfare officer, a health team conducted a routine check-up on Tuesday and discovered that she was suffering from malaria. Unfortunately, the following day, her condition worsened, and she was rushed to a hospital in Baliguda, where she was pronounced dead by the doctors.
Mishra highlighted that after Mallick was diagnosed with malaria, the assistant superintendent, in the absence of the superintendent, should have promptly referred her to the hospital in Baliguda. However, in this instance, she failed to fulfill her duty. Mishra also pointed out that the community health officer (CHO) who conducted the health check-up should have tested Mallick for anaemia and immediately referred her to the hospital upon detecting malaria.
An inquiry into the cause of the student’s untimely death was jointly conducted by the project administrator of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency, the district welfare officer, and the sub-divisional medical officer in Baliguda on Thursday. Following the submission of the inquiry report on Friday, the administration also transferred the hostel’s matron and instructed the chief district medical officer (CDMO) to issue a show cause notice to the CHO.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in residential schools and the importance of prompt and proper medical care. The authorities are expected to take stringent measures to prevent such negligence in the future and ensure the protection of young students under their care.
