Reports of a suspicious object interrupted the Baltimore Trans Pride festivities in Old Goucher on Saturday afternoon, marking the second disruption of a local Pride Month event. Jabari Lyles, coordinator and executive producer for Trans Pride, stated that law enforcement officials quickly identified the object as non-threatening, ensuring the safety of all attendees without major disruptions to the event.

Lyles, who also serves as the interim executive director of Blaq Equity Baltimore, mentioned that some vendors were asked to relocate temporarily as a precautionary measure while the team investigated the situation for the safety of everyone involved.

One local business owner, Brendan Dorr of Dutch Courage gin bar, shared that his establishment had to close for three hours due to the incident. Despite the disruption, Dorr expressed gratitude that the alarm turned out to be a false alarm and that no harm was caused.

Earlier this month, another incident disrupted Pride Parade festivities when a chemical agent, later identified as Mace, caused confusion and injuries to three individuals. This incident added to the heightened sense of caution within the Baltimore LGBTQIA+ community, especially following a global security alert issued by the State Department warning of potential threats to LGBTQ individuals and events during Pride Month.

According to the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, there are an estimated 1.6 million transgender individuals in the United States, including 24,000 in Maryland. Despite the challenges and security concerns, Lyles estimated that around 2,500 people attended the Trans Pride event on Saturday, enjoying a successful march, block party, and diverse stage performances.
