Two individuals have been detained in connection with a targeted terrorist attack that took place outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, Serbian authorities have confirmed.
The incident, which occurred early Saturday, involved an assailant who shot a Serbian police officer in the neck with a crossbow. The attacker, identified as a convert to Islam, was subsequently shot and killed by the officer.
Authorities have revealed that the perpetrator, hailing from Mladenovac near Belgrade, resided in Novi Pazar, a significant hub for Serbia’s Bosniak Muslim minority. Initial investigations suggest a potential link to individuals associated with the ultra-conservative Wahhabist branch of Islam prevalent in Saudi Arabia.
Extremist Links
According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, a number of individuals with ties to the Wahhabi extremist movement are under scrutiny in connection with the attack. Several locations in Serbia have been subjected to searches, with numerous individuals questioned by the authorities.
Dacic emphasised that the operation is aimed at targeting extremists and terrorists directly involved in the assault, as well as those suspected of affiliations with terrorist groups.
Increased Security Measures
Security measures have been heightened across the country, with the police operation ongoing to ensure the safety of the public. Authorities have traced the attacker’s movements in Belgrade, revealing that he had initially attempted to target the synagogue before turning towards the Israeli embassy.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz expressed gratitude to Serbian authorities for their swift response and cooperation in the aftermath of the attempted terror act. The Israeli ambassador to Serbia, Yahel Vilan, visited the injured police officer in hospital, where the 34-year-old underwent a successful operation to remove the arrow from his neck.
