According to Michigan State Police reports, Deputy Butler was providing backup support to a detective and a sergeant who had initiated a traffic stop. The detective identified the driver as an individual with active warrants for arrest, prompting the call for additional assistance.
Upon attempting to detain the passenger, later identified as 34-year-old Michael Eric Fiddler, a physical altercation ensued. Despite the detective’s efforts to subdue Fiddler with a taser, the suspect managed to retrieve a firearm and fatally shot Deputy Butler before fleeing the scene.
