A dramatic chase involving the North Carolina State Highway Patrol came to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday night as officers pursued a suspect along several major highways.
The pursuit began around 10:54 p.m. when officers spotted a vehicle driving erratically on I-87 near I-440. The driver refused to stop and continued west on I-40, eventually exiting at Exit 273.
Despite attempts to immobilize the vehicle using a PIT maneuver, the suspect managed to evade capture and disappeared from sight. However, the suspect was later identified as Chad Vernon Clark, a 47-year-old resident of Pittsboro.
Clark was seen pulling into his residence on Cornwallis Street and fleeing into his home, where he barricaded himself inside. Law enforcement agencies including the Chatham County Sheriff’s office and the Pittsboro Police Department were called to the scene to assist in the standoff.
After a tense standoff that lasted several hours, Clark was finally taken into custody around 5 a.m. The suspect was then transported to UNC-Chapel Hill for evaluation due to concerns of potential impairment. He has since been released from the hospital and is now in the custody of the Wake County Detention Facility.
Charges and Outcome
Clark faces several charges related to the incident, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and failure to heed to lights or siren. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the pursuit or the arrest, bringing a peaceful resolution to a potentially dangerous situation.
