Accident – Death – Obituary News : PITTSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A man has been apprehended after leading troopers on a chase spanning multiple counties that culminated in an extended standoff, as reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol on Sunday.
The incident unfolded at approximately 10:54 p.m. on Saturday when troopers initiated a pursuit on I-87 near I-440, situated east of downtown Raleigh. The specific reason for the chase initiation was not disclosed.
Despite law enforcement’s attempts to stop the vehicle, the suspect continued westward on I-40 before taking Exit 273 towards Chapel Hill. A PIT maneuver, a tactic used to halt fleeing vehicles, was executed but proved unsuccessful in halting the suspect’s progress.
Subsequently, the suspect eluded law enforcement, prompting the discontinuation of the pursuit. However, overnight, troopers located the suspect pulling into his residence on Cornwallis St. in close proximity to downtown Pittsboro.
Upon the suspect fleeing into his residence, efforts to coax him out proved fruitless. The standoff that ensued involved the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and the Pittsboro Police Department, lending support to the NCSHP in resolving the situation.
At approximately 5 a.m., the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Chad Vernon Clark, was taken into custody without any injuries sustained by the public, the suspect, or law enforcement personnel throughout the pursuit and subsequent apprehension.
Clark was transported to a medical facility for an assessment of impairment before being transferred to the Wake County Detention Facility as per the NCSHP’s statement.
He faces charges of felony fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and failure to yield to lights or siren. The NCSHP has indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming..
