SALT LAKE CITY (KTVX) — Utah fire captain identified as victim in Colorado rafting accident
A tragic incident occurred earlier this week when Captain Michael Harp, a 54-year-old Utah fire captain, lost his life in a rafting accident along the Green River at Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado. Captain Harp, a second-generation firefighter with 27 years of experience at the Salt Lake City Fire Department, was on a private permitted trip when the accident took place.
According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, Captain Harp was reported missing on Thursday afternoon after his boat got pinned against a rock. Unfortunately, he was unresponsive and drifted downriver after losing his lifejacket.
After an extensive search effort, Captain Harp’s body was found about 10 miles downstream from the incident and airlifted to the Moffat County Coroner’s Office. The coroner’s office officially confirmed his identity last week.
Captain Harp’s Legacy
Captain Michael Harp was not only dedicated to serving the citizens of Salt Lake City but also to his fellow firefighters. His commitment to service, leadership, compassion, and sense of humour will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department expressed their condolences to Captain Harp’s family and urged the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time. They also highlighted his role as a member of Utah Task Force 1 and his deployment to Ground Zero on 9/11.
As a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Dinosaur National Monument spans over 210,000 acres in both Utah and Colorado. The park is renowned for its whitewater rafting opportunities on the Green and Yampa rivers.
