In a tragic turn of events, Deputy William Henry Butler Jr. of the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office lost his life in the line of duty on Thursday. The community has since rallied together to show their support for his grieving family.

A GoFundMe campaign, spearheaded by Kelly Martin, has been set up to raise funds for Deputy Butler’s family. The campaign has already raised over $3,700 as of Saturday, June 29, showcasing the outpouring of love and support for the fallen deputy’s loved ones.

According to Martin, who organized the fundraiser, the community’s support is crucial during such a difficult time. The campaign aims to provide financial assistance to Deputy Butler’s wife, Sarah, and their five children, in the wake of this devastating loss.

In addition to the GoFundMe page, a donation account has been established at Fifth Third Bank under the name “The Deputy Bill Butler Family Fund c/o the Hillsdale County Community Foundation.” The family has requested that donations be made to this account in lieu of flowers, although the exact amount raised through this channel is currently undisclosed.

Deputy Butler, aged 51, served the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years. He was not only a dedicated law enforcement officer but also an Iraq War veteran, a loving husband, and a father of five. His untimely passing has left a void in the community that will not easily be filled.

The tragic incident occurred during a routine traffic stop near Osseo, where Deputy Butler was shot by Eric Michael Fiddler, a 34-year-old man with active warrants. Despite the efforts of his fellow officers to save him, Deputy Butler succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Fiddler, who fled the scene, was later found and killed in a shootout with officers. The swift resolution of the manhunt brought some closure to the community, but the loss of Deputy Butler’s life remains a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day.

Funeral services for Deputy Butler are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 3, at the Hillsdale College Christ Chapel, followed by interment with military honors at Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale. Visitation hours have been arranged for Tuesday, July 2, at the Hillsdale Assembly of God Church.

The support and solidarity shown by the Hillsdale County community in the aftermath of this tragedy serve as a testament to the strong bonds that exist within the tight-knit community. As the family and friends of Deputy Butler mourn his loss, they are comforted by the knowledge that they are not alone in their grief..
