Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the sailors involved in a devastating multi-vehicle crash near California’s Camp Pendleton. A Navy spokesperson expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sailors’ families, friends and coworkers.”
The sailors have been identified as 37-year-old Stephen Jermaine Williams, stationed in San Diego, and 28-year-old Jess Lee Davis, assigned to the USS Alexandria (SSN 757) in San Diego.
The Navy community is in mourning following the tragic accident. Brian O’Rourke, a Navy spokesman, issued a statement saying, “The Navy family mourns the loss of two shipmates in Thursday’s traffic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sailors’ families, friends and coworkers, and we ask they be afforded privacy during this difficult time.”
The third victim of the crash remains unidentified at this time.
The fatal collision occurred on Interstate 5 after a Jeep struck a guardrail around 3 a.m. local time. Subsequently, a passing car collided with the Jeep, causing it to overturn, as reported by California Highway Patrol via CBS 8.
A group of four motorcyclists following closely behind crashed into the Jeep and another vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, before igniting into flames, according to ABC 7.
CHP reported that individuals in the Jeep sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver and a passenger in the other vehicle are being treated for minor to moderate injuries.
Due to the accident, Interstate 5 was closed from Las Pulgas Road at Exit 62 to 76/Coast Highway at Exit 54. Motorists were advised to avoid the area as CHP conducted its investigation.
The lanes were reopened later on Thursday morning, as per ABC 7.
