The national capital awoke to yet another overcast morning on Saturday, with light showers recorded in parts of the city following a staggering 228.1 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period on Friday, marking the highest rainfall for a single day in June in 88 years.

As the monsoon season makes its presence felt in Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall over the next five days, with heavy showers expected in certain areas until July 1.

The minimum temperature in Delhi on Saturday stood at 28.0 °C, which falls within the normal range for this time of year, compared to 24.7°C the previous day.

Here are the most recent updates concerning the rainfall situation in Delhi:

1. Numerous parts of the city remain waterlogged, with many areas experiencing extended power outages.

2. The IMD has reported that June has now seen a total of 234.5mm of rainfall, which is more than three times the average monthly rainfall of 74.1mm.

3. Tragically, the bodies of three labourers were recovered from the rubble of a collapsed wall at a construction site in Vasant Vihar. Two of the deceased have been identified as Santosh Kumar Yadav (19) and Santosh (38), while the third labourer’s identity remains unknown.

4. Rescue operations are ongoing to ensure no other individuals are trapped under the debris. National Disaster Response Force teams, along with Delhi Disaster Management Authority and civic agencies, are diligently working on this operation.

5. Two young boys, aged 8 and 10, lost their lives after drowning in a rainwater-filled ditch in New Usmanpur, while another individual drowned in a flooded underpass in Shalimar Bagh.

6. Tragically, a 39-year-old man was electrocuted in the Prem Nagar area of Rohini due to the heavy rainfall.

7. The intense rain has also resulted in trees being uprooted in various locations, causing damage to properties and vehicles parked in residential areas.

8. The Delhi government has established a 24-hour control room to monitor the waterlogging situation, as announced by Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.

9. Operations at Delhi Airport T-1 have been temporarily suspended following the canopy collapse incident, impacting around 200 daily flights. Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has set up a dedicated war room to assist affected passengers with refunds or alternative flight arrangements. He has also assured affected individuals of refunds within seven days or alternate flight options.

10. The Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 304A (death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

These heartbreaking incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and caution during extreme weather conditions. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those affected by these tragic events..
