The Cyber Crime Wing of Tambaram City Police has apprehended a 29-year-old man for allegedly conning a 52-year-old man out of ₹50 lakh in Tambaram by impersonating a law enforcement official.
The victim, identified as M. Suresh Kumar from Irumbuliyur, Tambaram, filed a complaint with the Tambaram City Police Commissioner, stating that an unknown individual coerced him into transferring ₹50 lakh from his bank account after masquerading as a TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) officer and threatening him with legal action.
According to the complaint, Suresh Kumar received a call on February 19 from a mobile number where the caller claimed to be a TRAI officer. The caller informed Suresh Kumar that the Mumbai police had filed a criminal case against him for alleged money laundering activities and warned him of impending investigation by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation). The caller then instructed Suresh Kumar to transfer ₹50 lakh to specified accounts, promising a refund upon completion of the verification process.
Believing the caller’s claims, Suresh Kumar complied and transferred the requested amount. It was only after some time had passed that he realised he had fallen victim to a scam. Subsequently, he reported the incident to the police.
After conducting a thorough investigation, including scrutinising call records and bank account details, law enforcement authorities were able to track down the suspect. The alleged fraudster has been identified as S. Mohamed Shahid, a 29-year-old individual hailing from Kerala. He was apprehended and brought to Chennai for further legal proceedings, ultimately being remanded in judicial custody.
