(NewsNation) — In a remarkable turn of events, a pocket watch that once belonged to President Theodore Roosevelt has been recovered almost 40 years after it was stolen from an exhibition. The watch, which holds significant sentimental value, was loaned to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site where Roosevelt resided. It was later displayed at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in 1971 before being stolen in July 1987.
After an extensive search, the watch resurfaced at an auction house in Florida, catching the attention of an auctioneer who suspected its historical significance. The auctioneer promptly contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the National Park Service for authentication.
Upon examination, it was confirmed that the watch was a gift from President Roosevelt’s youngest sister, Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, and his brother-in-law, Douglas Robinson, Jr., before he departed to fight in the Spanish-American War. Both the FBI and NPS officials positively identified the timepiece as the stolen watch from over three decades ago.
Special Agent Robert Giczy of the FBI Art Crime Team praised the collaborative efforts that led to the successful recovery of the watch, stating, “NPS plays a crucial role in the enforcement and retrieval of our national treasures. This partnership ensured the safe return of this historic artefact for the enjoyment of future generations.”
In a poignant repatriation ceremony held in New York, the watch was returned to its rightful home at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, just days before the 37th anniversary of its disappearance.
