Accident – Death – Obituary News : An eye-catching installation has been unveiled in the window of the former Primark store in Margate, shedding light on the tragic reality of homeless individuals losing their lives on the streets. Created by Margate-based artist Phien O’Phien, known for his thought-provoking exhibitions at prestigious venues like Tate Modern, the installation, named Consider, is a poignant portrayal of the struggles faced by those who are disenfranchised in society.

The centerpiece of Consider is a collection of discarded chairs, meticulously painted to symbolize individuals living rough on the streets. These chairs represent the forgotten members of our community, abandoned and left to fend for themselves in harsh conditions. Alongside the chairs stands a forensic police tent, serving as a stark reminder of the final refuge for many homeless individuals in their last moments.

Visitors to the former Primark store can witness Consider up close, with the installation positioned near the shelter where some of Thanet’s homeless population seek refuge. Additionally, the exhibition includes a booklet and postcards that provide further insight into the artist’s creative process and the underlying message of the installation.

Following its display in Margate, Consider is set to be showcased at the Model gallery in Ireland on July 6. This exhibition marks a continuation of Phien O’Phien’s exploration of societal issues and his commitment to raising awareness about the struggles faced by marginalized communities.

In a statement about Consider, Phien O’Phien shared the emotional inspiration behind the installation, recounting a heartbreaking encounter with a deceased homeless man on a seaside bench. This encounter served as a catalyst for the artist to shine a light on the plight of homeless individuals and challenge society’s indifference towards their suffering.

The director of the Margate School Gallery, Uwe Derksen, praised Consider for its powerful impact and ability to provoke meaningful conversations about homelessness. He emphasized the importance of art in raising awareness and fostering empathy for vulnerable populations in society.

The installation comes at a time when homelessness remains a pressing issue in Thanet, with recent data revealing a concerning number of deaths among homeless individuals. Despite the challenges faced by those living on the streets, initiatives like Consider offer a glimmer of hope and a platform for dialogue on how society can better support its most vulnerable members.

As the community reflects on the message behind Consider, it serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to address homelessness and work towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate society. Through art and storytelling, Phien O’Phien’s installation invites viewers to consider the humanity and dignity of those often overlooked and marginalized in our midst..
