Accident – Death – Obituary News :

UTICA, NY — Authorities in upstate New York have confirmed that a 13-year-old boy was tragically shot and killed by a police officer on Friday night. The incident occurred in Utica, a city located in the Mohawk Valley region with a population of approximately 65,000 people.

During a press conference held on Saturday, Utica Police Chief Mark Williams revealed that the fatal shooting took place after officers stopped two juvenile pedestrians at around 10:18 p.m. as part of an ongoing police investigation. One of the juveniles attempted to flee from the officers, prompting a chase.

Chief Williams stated that as the teenager ran from the police, he brandished what appeared to be a real handgun, sparking immediate concern among the officers. The situation escalated, leading to a ground struggle between the teen and the law enforcement officials. In the midst of the altercation, a single shot was fired by one of the officers, striking the boy in the chest.

The victim, identified as Nyah Mway, was an 8th-grade student who had fled to the U.S. as a refugee from Myanmar. Despite receiving prompt medical attention at Wynn Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the tragic incident, Chief Williams refrained from divulging further specifics about the events that transpired before the shooting, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. However, officers were able to recover a replica GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine at the scene, which was later determined to be a pellet gun.

The identities of the officers involved in the shooting have not yet been disclosed to the public.

Kathleen Davis Offers Condolences to the Victim’s Family

Kathleen Davis, the interim superintendent of the Utica City School District, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family of Nyah Mway in a statement released online. Davis conveyed profound sadness over the “tragic and senseless loss” of the young student and extended support to the law enforcement partners who strive to maintain the safety of the community.
