Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident unfolded in Utica, New York, on Friday night when a police officer fatally shot a 13-year-old boy who was running with what appeared to be a real firearm. The shooting occurred after officers stopped two youths in the city, located about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, one of the youths fled on foot and pointed a handgun at the officers during the encounter. In response, one of the officers fired a single shot at the teen during a struggle on the ground, hitting him in the chest. Despite immediate first aid efforts by the officers, the boy, identified as Nyah Mway, succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital.

Nyah Mway was a 13-year-old Karen refugee born in Myanmar and an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School. Utica is home to a significant population of refugees from Myanmar, including Karens, an ethnic minority deeply affected by the political turmoil in their home country.

Community Response and Investigations

The tragic incident has sparked a wave of sorrow and outrage in Utica. Kathleen Davis, interim superintendent of the Utica City School District, expressed profound sadness over the loss and extended condolences to Nyah Mway’s family. The Utica Police Department is conducting an internal investigation to ensure that officers followed protocols and training during the encounter.

Mayor Michael Galime has pledged transparency in the investigation process and assured the community that all relevant information will be made available to the public. The New York State Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation to determine the justification of the shooting.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

At a press conference held at Utica City Hall, emotions ran high as community members demanded answers and justice for Nyah Mway. Mayor Galime reiterated the city’s commitment to transparency and promised to engage with the teen’s family and the community to address their concerns.

While a video of the incident has circulated on social media, Chief Williams cautioned that it may not capture the full context of the encounter. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the tragic and traumatic nature of the incident.

As the investigation unfolds, the Utica community remains on edge, grappling with the loss of a young life and seeking accountability for the events that transpired on that fateful night.
