Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident unfolded in upstate New York, where a 13-year-old boy, identified as Nyah Mway, was fatally shot by a police officer while fleeing with what appeared to be a realistic firearm. The shooting occurred in Utica, a city located about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, after officers stopped two youths late on Friday night.

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, one of the youths attempted to escape on foot and pointed what seemed to be a handgun at the officers. In response, one of the officers fired a single shot at the teen during a ground struggle, hitting him in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries.

Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old Karen refugee born in Myanmar and an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, tragically lost his life in the incident. The Utica City School District’s interim superintendent, Kathleen Davis, expressed profound sadness over the senseless loss and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

Ethnic Background of the Victim

Karens, an ethnic minority group from Myanmar, have been involved in conflicts with the military regime in the country. The army in Myanmar ousted the elected government in 2021, leading to widespread protests against the military rule. Utica, with a significant population of over 4,200 refugees from Myanmar, has become a home for many Karen refugees seeking safety and peace.

Community Response and Investigations

Following the tragic incident, members of the Karen community and other residents gathered at Utica City Hall, where emotions ran high. Mayor Michael Galime assured the community of transparency in the investigation, with the Office of the New York State Attorney General leading the probe to determine the justification of the shooting.

The police department will also conduct an internal investigation to assess whether officers followed protocols and training during the encounter. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave with pay as the investigations unfold.

Call for Transparency and Accountability

Amid calls for justice and accountability, Mayor Galime emphasized the city’s commitment to providing all information related to the incident to the community. The full body camera footage from the officers involved will be released in the coming days to shed light on the events leading up to the tragic shooting.

While a video of the incident has circulated on social media, Chief Williams cautioned that it may not present the complete picture of what transpired. He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledged the traumatic nature of the situation for all those involved.

Conclusion

The shooting of Nyah Mway has sparked conversations about police conduct, community relations, and the need for transparency in law enforcement actions. As investigations continue, the Utica community remains in mourning for the loss of a young life and seeks answers to the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful night.
