ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) An 8-year-old boy who was critically injured in a mass shooting at a splash pad in Rochester Hills has been released from the hospital, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff revealed that the young boy, whose name has not been disclosed, is now resting comfortably at home.

Mother Injured While Shielding Her Children

The boy’s mother, a 39-year-old resident of Rochester Hills, was seriously injured while shielding her children from the gunman during the tragic incident. According to the sheriff’s office, she remains in the hospital, while her 4-year-old son has already been discharged.

Multiple Victims Injured in the Shooting

The mass shooting at the splash pad left a total of nine people injured, including the 4-year-old and 8-year-old siblings. One woman, aged 30, is still hospitalized, while the other victims have been discharged. The age range of the victims varies from four to 78 years old.

“Many of the victims who were released earlier still face significant healing and health challenges,” stated the sheriff’s office.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting, described by Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard as “random”, took place on Saturday, June 15th at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad on Auburn Road near John R. The suspect, identified as Michael Nash of Shelby Township, fired approximately 28 shots from the steps of the splash pad, just 20 feet away from the play area. Nash later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound that same night.

Community Support Through Go-Fund Me

A Go-Fund Me page was set up by the 8-year-old boy’s aunt to support the family during this challenging time. The page, verified by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, has already raised over $160,000 towards its $175,000 goal.

“An act of evil happened upon my family and other families…at the splash pad,” the aunt wrote in an update. “But thousands and thousands of acts of kindness have shown through and upon us.”

Support for Other Affected Families

Additional verified Go-Fund Me pages have been created to support other families affected by the tragic incident. The Iafrate family, a family of five, and the Coughlin family have also received significant support through these fundraising efforts.

These families are facing challenges as they recover from the physical and emotional trauma of the shooting. The community’s support and generosity have been instrumental in helping them navigate through this difficult time.
