MUMBAI: A shocking case of insurance fraud involving a hefty sum of Rs 1.1 crore has come to light in Bhayander, Mumbai. The main suspect in this elaborate scam is a 45-year-old woman named Kanchan Pai, also known as Pavitra. Reports suggest that she faked her death not once, but twice in the span of two years to claim insurance money.
According to authorities, Kanchan’s husband and son collaborated with her in this fraudulent scheme. Together, they managed to claim Rs 1.1 crore from five private sector insurance companies between the years 2021 and 2023. Out of this total amount, nearly Rs 70 lakh had already been disbursed to them before the scam was uncovered. Currently, all three individuals are on the run, evading law enforcement.
Collaboration with Medical Practitioner
The investigation into this case revealed that Kanchan alias Pavitra had enlisted the help of a medical practitioner named Dr Ashutosh Yadav, aged 50, to carry out the fraud. Dr Yadav, too, is currently absconding from authorities. The scam involved obtaining fake death certificates and cremation receipts, which were crucial in making insurance claims.
Multiple Identities Used
Further probing into the matter uncovered that Kanchan had taken out insurance policies from a total of five private companies using two separate sets of Aadhaar and PAN cards. This elaborate ruse allowed her to deceive the insurance companies and claim money under different identities.
This case of insurance fraud highlights the lengths to which some individuals will go to manipulate the system for personal gain. The authorities are working diligently to apprehend the culprits involved and ensure that justice is served.
