In a shocking incident at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, a Virginia man has landed himself in hot water after video footage captured him shoving a referee during a wrestling match. The referee, identified as Sean, recounted the events to Queen City News, revealing that the altercation occurred on June 22nd.
Details of the Incident
According to court documents, the confrontation unfolded when the man, later identified as Joshua Hammond, expressed his displeasure with a call made by Sean during the match. Sean explained in a video posted on TikTok, which has garnered over 23 million views, that he was trying to prevent an illegal move from taking place.
Describing the incident, Sean stated, “You can hear me say, ‘Let go of the leg, let go of the leg.’” Despite his years of experience as a referee, Sean admitted that he had never encountered such aggression before. He added, “Parents yell, and that’s normal, but they don’t normally come on the mat. . . .You know, I wasn’t expecting that at all.”
Escalation of the Situation
Prior to the shove, Hammond had reportedly complained to Sean about his wrestler being poked in the eye. Sean noted, “[Hammond] was complaining, saying ‘he got poked in the eye’ and he was kind of getting loud, but that’s pretty normal. . . I didn’t see him get poked, but the wrestler took his 90-second break, and then continued.”
The altercation ensued when Sean blew the whistle to address an illegal move, prompting Hammond to stride onto the mat and forcefully shove the referee several feet. Subsequently, Hammond was ejected from the tournament, and Sean wasted no time in filing charges with Cabarrus County authorities.
Legal Consequences
Following the incident, Hammond was arrested and later released on bond. He is expected to turn himself in to authorities in Cabarrus County to face the charges brought against him. Sean, undeterred by the incident, expressed his determination to continue officiating and nurturing young wrestlers.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Sean acknowledged the need to be more vigilant of potential disruptions from spectators. He remarked, “Changing my approach. I think I may put my head on more swivel when I’m on the mound, especially if there’s parents in the corner getting loud.”
