A 19-year-old man from Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, has been charged with a terrorism offense after entering the office of State Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp with plans to kill him, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Thursday.
Jordan Patten was refused bail and appeared before the Newcastle Local Court on Thursday via audio-visual link. He was charged with one count of acts done in preparation for a terrorist act under Section 101.6 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
Acting Magistrate Anthony Spence stated that there was intent to harm Crakanthorp due to his status as a member of parliament.
On June 26, police were alerted that Patten had entered Crakanthorp’s office briefly before leaving without making contact with staff. He was arrested at the Newcastle Museum soon after. Police seized several items from him, including a knife and tactical gear. No one was harmed during the incident.
Joint Counter Terrorism Team Investigation
The Joint Counter Terrorism Team, comprising members from the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), and NSW Crime Commission, is further investigating the incident. Authorities have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat.
Patten’s Manifesto and Motivation
Investigators revealed that Patten had circulated a 205-page manifesto to various public figures and media outlets, detailing his anti-immigration and anti-diversity views. He also expressed admiration for the Christchurch mass killer, which was shared in encrypted extremist groups online.
Patten’s brother William spoke to local media and described Jordan as a quiet and smart introvert with mental health issues. Patten is set to appear in court again on August 21, facing the possibility of life imprisonment.
Rise in Knife Violence in New South Wales
Knife violence is uncommon in New South Wales, but there has been a recent increase in stabbing incidents. In April, a 16-year-old was charged with terrorism offenses for stabbing a bishop and worshippers at a church in Wakeley, Sydney. Additionally, a man was shot dead by police after stabbing six people in a shopping mall in Bondi, Sydney.
