Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Court documents have revealed that two roommates of Franklin Peña, 26, and Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, 22, the men accused of killing 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, went to the police separately after recognizing the suspects in surveillance images that were released to the public.

One of the roommates disclosed to the authorities that he was watching the news with Peña and Martinez-Rangel when he saw the images. He discreetly texted his cousin in Laredo, expressing his concern as the suspects were present in the room with him. The cousin promptly contacted the Houston Police Department (HPD), and the roommate managed to leave the apartment under the guise of an excuse before being picked up by the police.

The night before Jocelyn was tragically killed, the same roommate informed the police that he was not cohabiting with the suspects. He recounted going out for food with them and returning home around 10 p.m., while Peña and Martinez-Rangel stayed out. Upon his return, he discovered that his landlord was evicting him. Subsequently, the suspects invited him to stay with them and contribute towards the rent. It was on June 18 that he saw the news report that led to his decision to contact the authorities.

Another individual, the boss of one of the accused, was residing in the apartment as well. According to the court documents, the boss revealed to the police that Peña had admitted to him on June 19 that they had made a grave error after a night of partying and had harmed someone.

The boss dropped Peña off and proceeded to his girlfriend’s residence, where he was informed about the discovery of Jocelyn’s body. Upon being shown the surveillance images by his girlfriend, he immediately recognized the suspects and contacted the police to report Peña and Martinez-Rangel.

Jocelyn’s Tragic Discovery

Jocelyn’s mother, Alexis, had put her daughter and 5-year-old son to bed around 10 p.m. on June 16. It is believed that Jocelyn left the apartment secretly sometime around midnight.

When Alexis realized her daughter was missing, she traced her phone to a nearby skate park, close to where Jocelyn’s body was eventually found, as per the court documents.

At approximately 6 a.m. on June 17, a passerby crossing the Rankin Road bridge near Kuykendahl noticed something unusual and upon closer inspection, discovered it to be a body. The authorities were alerted, and HPD’s dive team was called to the scene, confirming the body to be that of Jocelyn.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that Jocelyn’s cause of death was strangulation, further adding to the tragic circumstances surrounding the case.
