PORTLAND, Ore. — A YouTube docuseries titled “CHAOSTOWN,” featuring a Portland tagger boasting about a large stash of spray paint, has led police to conduct a raid on his Centennial neighborhood residence. The raid resulted in the seizure of approximately $10,000 worth of spray paint and related supplies, according to authorities.
Portland police revealed on Tuesday that they executed the raid at the home of suspect James S. Fischel in the 1800 block of Southeast 174th Avenue during his absence.
During the search, officers discovered over 1,500 cans of spray paint, which 40-year-old Fischel described as “every graffiti writer’s dream” in an episode of “CHAOSTOWN,” as stated in the Portland Police Bureau’s press release on Tuesday.
The Portland Police Bureau’s Neighborhood Response Team initiated an investigation into Fischel following the discovery of the YouTube video featuring an individual believed to be Fischel in mid-May. Despite Fischel’s obscured identity in the video, the officers managed to establish a connection between the video, Fischel, and his residence.
Authorities allege that Fischel is linked to a series of GIMER tags, which reportedly stand for Graffiti is Me Escaping Reality. Additionally, Fischel is suspected of providing graffiti vandals with necessary supplies, police sources disclosed.
As of Tuesday, Fischel has not been detained by the police or charged with any offences in connection to the seized items. However, law enforcement officials have indicated in their statement that this situation is subject to change.
“While Fischel is currently away from the area, authorities are aware of his whereabouts and are actively pursuing criminal charges,” the statement confirmed.
