A 36-year-old man in Nakasongola District is currently in police custody following the brutal murder of a 76-year-old woman identified as Elena Namulondo at Kyakabombo village on Friday, June 28.

The suspect, who is a grandchild of the deceased, narrowly escaped a mob lynching after a police sniffer dog led detectives to his house. A blood-stained hand hoe was recovered from the scene shortly after the tragic incident in Kyakabombo village, Kalongo Subcounty.

Mr Johnson Wandera, the LC1 Chairperson of Kyakabombo village, revealed in an interview with the Monitor on June 29 that the 76-year-old woman, who lived with two grandchildren, was attacked when the children were away on separate errands.

According to the Savana Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Sam Twineamazima, the incident was reported to the police by the village LC1 Chairperson, Mr Johnson Wandera. The police investigation team utilized a canine unit that led them to the recovery of the murder weapon and the apprehension of the suspect.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased had sent one grandchild to buy tomatoes at a nearby stall while the other child was picking mangoes when the attack took place. Residents and local leaders claim that the suspect had previously sold his share of land given to him by the deceased and later demanded more property.

Mr Sunday Rogers Bwanga, the District Councilor representing Kalongo Subcounty, highlighted that the suspect narrowly escaped a lynching by residents who were familiar with his history and behavior. He emphasized the need for youth to work hard and not resort to violence for material gain.

Bwanga expressed concern over the rising cases of greed-driven crimes in Nakasongola District, where individuals seek to eliminate their parents and guardians for inheritance. He stressed the importance of educating the youth on the value of hard work and the right to property ownership.
