A 69-year-old man, Edward Kiley, has been arrested and is facing federal charges for allegedly constructing an improvised balloon to deliver an explosive device that caused damage to several buildings east of Downtown Colorado Springs in January. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) confirmed the arrest and the charges against Kiley.
Previous Criminal History
Kiley was arrested on January 23, 2024, after being identified as a suspect in the explosion that occurred near 548 East Costilla Street on January 12. In addition to this incident, Kiley was also suspected to be involved in other explosions throughout the city. Notably, he had previously been arrested and charged in connection with an explosion that took place at his residence in 2018.
Identification Through Security Footage
The investigation into the Costilla Street explosion led to Kiley’s identification, partially through security footage from the night of the incident. The footage captured a truck similar to Kiley’s driving into an alleyway between 548 and 542 East Costilla Street with plastic sheeting in the truck bed. Subsequently, a balloon-like object could be seen floating away from the alley and getting stuck on a chain link fence near 548 Costilla Street before exploding and causing damage to nearby buildings.
Charges Against Kiley
Following his arrest, Kiley was charged with multiple offenses, including Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession or Use of an Explosive or Incendiary Device, and Criminal Mischief. Furthermore, on June 28, Kiley was indicted on two federal charges related to the CSPD’s investigation of the Costilla Street explosion.
