A significant development has occurred in the murder case of 52-year-old Richard Pledger from Statesville. The suspect, 30-year-old Devin Emmanuel Rankin, was apprehended by Statesville Police Officers on Thursday (June 27). Rankin faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a firearm within city limits.
The incident took place on April 21 at approximately 12:25 a.m. when the Statesville Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim at a residence on Stewart Court. Upon arrival, officers found Richard Pledger inside the residence with a gunshot wound, and despite efforts from emergency responders, Pledger was pronounced dead at the scene. The Violent Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigations of the Statesville Police Department immediately launched an investigation, identifying Devin Emanuel Rankin as the prime suspect.
Arrest and Investigation
Following an intensive search operation, the U.S. Marshals Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the Statesville Police Department, successfully apprehended Rankin at a residence on North Lackey Street in Statesville. Rankin was promptly taken before a magistrate and remanded to the Iredell County Detention Center with no bond. His next appearance in District Court is scheduled for July 16.
