Dari shared her struggles with internalised homophobia and transphobia from a young age, leading to a suicide attempt before finally embracing her true identity as a trans woman. Despite facing obstacles in accessing gender-affirming care in Russia, Dari resorted to obtaining injectable hormones through underground channels, highlighting the dangerous and desperate measures some individuals are forced to take.
The challenges faced by non-binary individuals in Russia were exemplified by Roman, a 25-year-old graduate student in psychology at St. Petersburg State University. Roman described the censorship and discrimination present in academic institutions following the implementation of the “LGBT propaganda” law, which has stifled research and education on gender and sexuality. Forced to leave Russia with his partner due to the increasingly hostile environment, Roman’s experience reflects the broader struggle for acceptance and safety faced by the LGBT community in the country.
As the rights of LGBT individuals in Russia continue to erode amidst hostile political rhetoric and discriminatory laws, the future remains uncertain for queer people living in the country. The stories of Dari and Roman shed light on the harsh realities faced by transgender and non-binary individuals in Russia, underscoring the urgent need for greater protection and support for the LGBT community in the face of ongoing challenges..
