Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A man from Chicago has been apprehended by authorities after allegedly making threats of a “military precision” mass shooting at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was alerted on June 14 when a man on Chicago’s Riverwalk handed a note to a security guard at a nearby restaurant. The note contained alarming content suggesting a planned mass shooting with military precision at the Lake County courthouse, as per Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Furthermore, the note included threatening remarks aimed at a Lake County judge and a Chicago police officer who is part of the FBI task force, Covelli added.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lindsay Hicks revealed that the note specifically mentioned Courtroom 103, presided over by Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim. Hicks noted that Nerheim had previously dealt with a case involving the suspect, Daniel B. Pederson, and had been threatened by him during his tenure as the state’s attorney.

Following the discovery of the note, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

The suspect, Pederson, was sighted by the same security guard on the Riverwalk on Thursday, prompting immediate action. The security guard promptly contacted the Chicago Police Department and the FBI, leading to the swift location and apprehension of Pederson.

After confirming his identity as Daniel B. Pederson, aged 42, from Chicago, Lake County sheriff’s detectives, in collaboration with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, secured an arrest warrant for Pederson on a charge of threatening a public official, classified as a Class 3 felony.

Members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team took custody of Pederson in Chicago on Friday, following which he was transported to the Lake County Jail. He appeared before a First Appearance Court hearing on Saturday morning.

During the court proceedings, Pederson exhibited disruptive behaviour by swearing at Lake County Judge Stacey Seneczko, resulting in deputies promptly escorting him out of the courtroom and back to the jail.

The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition for Pederson’s detention on Friday morning, hinting at the possibility of additional charges in the future.

In response, Seneczko ordered Pederson to be held until a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, mentioning the potential assignment of an out-of-county judge to oversee the case.

Notably, Pederson had a prior arrest in 2014 for making threatening calls to a state agency, where he purportedly threatened to harm individuals and set fire to the Lake County Courthouse and Gurnee Police Department.
