Accident – Death – Obituary News : SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Ciro Gómez Leyva narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in December 2022 when two individuals on a motorcycle opened fire on his car with an automatic weapon. Thanks to the bullet-proof windows and doors on his Jeep, the controversial television host from Mexico City survived the attack.
Surveillance footage from the scene of the shooting led authorities to one of the suspects, who implicated a man known as “El Patrón” or “The Boss” as the mastermind behind the plot to kill Gómez Leyva. The U.S. Attorney in San Diego identified “The Boss” as Armando Escárcega Valdez, a lawyer from Mexico City who had fled to Southern California following the attempted assassination.
Escárcega appeared in a federal courtroom in San Diego on Thursday and agreed to be extradited to Mexico to face charges related to the incident. While his attorney maintained that Escárcega was not admitting guilt, a court in Mexico had issued an arrest warrant for him in January of the previous year after evidence linking him to the murder plot was found at his home and law office.
Wiretaps provided further evidence implicating Escárcega, who managed to evade arrest until last October when he was apprehended in Bakersfield, California. It remains unclear when he will be extradited back to Mexico to face charges of conspiracy, extortion, and attempted murder.
Initially, a total of 11 individuals were detained in connection with the assassination attempt on Gómez Leyva. One of them, identified as Yunuen “N,” was recently sentenced to three years and six months in prison for her involvement in the incident.
Gómez Leyva continues to work for Imagen Noticias, and in a post on his social media account, he acknowledged the pending extradition of Escárcega Valdez. The ongoing investigation into the assassination plot underscores the dangers faced by journalists and public figures in Mexico and highlights the importance of ensuring their safety and security..
