Accident – Death – Obituary News :
The Oakland Fire Department is mourning the loss of 25-year-old firefighter Caeden Laffan, who is believed to have drowned at Pacific Beach in San Diego early Thursday morning.
Laffan was enjoying time with friends and family when he entered the ocean approximately 200 yards south of Crystal Pier. Despite being surrounded by loved ones, no one heard him struggle or call for assistance.
San Diego lifeguard officials were alerted to Laffan’s disappearance at 2 a.m. His body was discovered two hours later along the shoreline to the north of the pier.
Ongoing Investigation
Oakland Fire Department official Michael Hunt confirmed that it appears Laffan tragically drowned, but the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is still ongoing.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Fire Chief Damon Covington praised Laffan, who graduated from an Oakland fire academy in 2019, as an “enthusiastic” member of the department with a bright future ahead of him.
Tragically, Laffan’s father, Oakland Fire Assistant Chief Sean Laffan, passed away while on duty in 2020. Caeden Laffan cited his father as his inspiration for joining the fire service, stating, “I knew I wanted to be an Oakland firefighter because of my dad.”
The loss of both father and son has deeply impacted the Oakland Fire Department and the wider community.
