A devastating incident occurred at a San Diego-area beach on Thursday, where a 25-year-old firefighter from Sacramento, Caeden Laffan, tragically drowned. Laffan, a graduate of Christian Brothers High School in 2017, was spending time with friends and family at Pacific Beach, located about 200 yards south of Crystal Pier, when the incident occurred. Shockingly, witnesses did not hear any cries for help or signs of struggle from Laffan as he entered the ocean.
Upon realising that Laffan had disappeared, a member of the group contacted emergency services, prompting a search operation led by San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero. Despite the efforts of lifeguards and assistance from a Coast Guard helicopter, Laffan’s body was discovered two hours later along the shoreline north of the pier.
It was revealed that Laffan had been in town to participate in a firefighter athletic event, with reports suggesting that he had consumed alcohol before entering the water. However, the exact circumstances leading to his drowning are yet to be determined, pending investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Michael Hunt, an official from the Oakland Fire Department, indicated that initial observations point towards drowning as the cause of Laffan’s death. Fire Chief Damon Covington expressed profound sadness over the tragic event, describing Laffan as an enthusiastic member of the department with a promising future.
Tragically, this is not the first loss suffered by the Laffan family, as Caeden’s father, Oakland fire Assistant Chief Sean Laffan, passed away while on duty in 2020. Sean Laffan’s death was attributed to a heart attack, leaving Caeden devastated by the loss of his father, who had inspired his career choice as an Oakland firefighter.
