A tragic incident unfolded at a beach in San Diego as Oakland firefighter Caedan Laffan, 25, drowned during a swim, leaving authorities and his loved ones devastated.
Laffan was enjoying a day out with friends and family when he ventured into the water and disappeared, as reported by KUSI.
Witnesses revealed that Laffan had entered the ocean, reaching chest to waist deep, before taking a few strokes and vanishing beneath the waves.
Following his disappearance, San Diego lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard teams initiated a search operation, leading to the recovery of Laffan’s body.
San Diego Fire and Rescue Lt. Rick Romero expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “Our lifeguard sergeant spotted him washed onto the beach on the north side of the pier. Unfortunately, incidents like these are always heartbreaking.”
While there are speculations of alcohol involvement, the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, as per KUSI.
Laffan, who was in San Diego to participate in the California Firefighter Summer Games, hailed from a family with a strong firefighting legacy. His father, a former assistant fire chief for the Oakland Fire Department, lost his life in the line of duty in 2020, and his grandfather also served as a firefighter.
