A tragic incident unfolded at a San Diego beach as 25-year-old Oakland firefighter Caedan Laffan drowned during a swim, leaving friends and family in shock, according to reports.
Laffan was enjoying a day out at the beach when he disappeared in the water after walking out chest to waist deep, as per a report by KUSI.
Despite efforts by San Diego lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard crews, Laffan’s body was recovered after an extensive search, with Lt. Rick Romero of San Diego Fire and Rescue expressing his condolences, stating, “Unfortunately, incidents happen. And it’s just a sad story.”
Questions have been raised about the involvement of alcohol in the incident, with Romero acknowledging the possibility. However, a detailed investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
Laffan, who was in San Diego to participate in the California Firefighter Summer Games, came from a family with a strong firefighting legacy. His father, a former assistant fire chief for the Oakland Fire Department, lost his life in the line of duty in 2020, while his grandfather also served as a firefighter.
