In a heartbreaking turn of events, an Oakland firefighter, 25-year-old Caedan Laffan, tragically drowned after he went missing while swimming at a beach in San Diego, as reported by authorities.
According to KUSI, Laffan was enjoying a day at the beach with friends and family when he ventured into the water and disappeared.
Witnesses revealed that Laffan had ventured into the ocean up to chest to waist deep before taking a few strokes and vanishing from sight.
San Diego lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard teams immediately initiated a search operation, leading to the recovery of Laffan’s body.
Lt. Rick Romero of San Diego Fire and Rescue expressed, “Our lifeguard sergeant spotted him washed ashore on the north side of the pier. Sadly, incidents like these serve as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with water activities.”
While the possibility of alcohol involvement has been raised, investigations into the incident are ongoing, as per KUSI reports.
Laffan, who was in San Diego to participate in the California Firefighter Summer Games, hailed from a lineage of firefighters. His father, a former assistant fire chief for the Oakland Fire Department, lost his life in the line of duty in 2020, and his grandfather also served as a firefighter.
