According to reports from KUSI, witnesses mentioned that Laffan had ventured into the ocean, wading out to chest to waist-deep waters. After taking a few strokes, he suddenly vanished from sight, prompting immediate concern and action from lifeguards.
San Diego lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard personnel launched a search operation, eventually locating and recovering Laffan’s body. Lt. Rick Romero of San Diego Fire and Rescue expressed his sorrow, stating, “Our lifeguard sergeant spotted him washed ashore on the north side of the pier. Unfortunately, incidents like these are always heartbreaking.”
