A woman in North Carolina has been arrested on charges of manslaughter and child abuse by wilful act causing serious injury after her eight-year-old daughter tragically died unattended inside a car.
According to a report by ABC News, the incident occurred on June 26 when the woman, identified as 36-year-old Ashlee Stallings, left her daughter inside the car amidst hot weather conditions while she went inside her office.
Stallings reportedly told the police that she had left the air conditioner of the car on, but claimed she believed her daughter had turned the car off because she was feeling cold.
An affidavit in the case revealed that Stallings discovered her daughter unresponsive on the backseat floorboard approximately an hour and a half after last hearing from the girl via text.
Upon finding her daughter in distress, Stallings observed that the child was taking shallow breaths and foaming at the mouth. She then used a hammer to break open the back window before attempting to drive to a local hospital. However, she stopped at a business for help along the way, as detailed in the affidavit.
Tragically, the child was pronounced dead early Thursday, hours after being transported to a hospital. Medical staff at the hospital informed the authorities that the girl had suffered brain herniation due to hyperthermia, with temperatures reaching 94 degrees Fahrenheit (nearly 35 degrees Celsius) outside at the time of the incident.
Stallings admitted to knowing the high temperature outside and acknowledged that she should not have left her daughter alone inside the car, as indicated in the affidavit.
