Abdullah Arif’s wife, Maeda Obaidi, recounted the harrowing journey the couple took to escape the violence in Iraq and find peace in America. Arif, a hardworking man who strived to integrate into American society and provide for his family, was tragically killed in a senseless act of violence at Union Tobacco on St. Paul’s West Side.

During the sentencing hearing, Ramsey County District Judge David Ireland handed down a sentence of 13 years and nine months to Elias-Kareem Hany Aly, the 22-year-old responsible for Arif’s murder. Aly had pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in exchange for the dismissal of an intentional murder charge.

Tragic Confrontation

The fatal encounter unfolded when Arif confronted Aly and his companions inside the store, requesting Aly to remove his mask. As Aly and his friends left the store, a confrontation escalated, leading to Aly fatally shooting Arif outside the premises. The incident, captured on surveillance footage, showed Arif approaching the group’s vehicle with a baseball bat before being shot by Aly.

Aly, who was on conditional release at the time of the murder, had a history of criminal offenses, including a previous charge of possession of a firearm by an ineligible person. Despite pleas for leniency from his attorney, Aly received a concurrent five-year prison term for the firearm possession charge.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Following the sentencing, Aly expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that he had acted out of fear and emotion. However, the judge emphasized that Arif’s actions, though confrontational, did not warrant the use of deadly force, leading to the decision to adhere to state sentencing guidelines.

Arif’s family, devastated by the loss of their beloved husband and father, found some closure in the court’s decision to hold Aly accountable for his actions. The community mourned the loss of a hardworking immigrant who sought peace and prosperity in his new homeland, only to be tragically cut down in a moment of violence.
