HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A young man is set to hear his sentence in Henrico County’s Circuit Court on Friday morning in connection to a tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and left another man injured.
Trevon Chappell, who was 18 years old at the time of his arrest, is one of three suspects charged in the shooting that occurred at the White Oak Shopping Center on July 3, 2021.
The shooting marked the first in a series of three violent incidents that unfolded over the Fourth of July weekend that year in Henrico County.
According to court records, Chappell is facing sentencing for involuntary manslaughter and unlawfully shooting into an occupied building.
Initially, Chappell had been charged with non-capital felony murder, maliciously discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, the first two charges were amended, and the third charge was dropped.
Henrico Police responded to the shooting at around 5:30 pm and arrived at a chaotic scene at the NOLA by Nisha store in the shopping center. Sadly, the 16-year-old victim, identified as Jamirah by her aunt, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Another man who was shot was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Two other individuals, Jihad Arlik Ruffin and a juvenile male, were also charged in connection to the shooting incident. The juvenile faced charges including shooting into an occupied building, felony murder, possession of a firearm while under the age of 18, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Ruffin, who was sentenced in December 2023, was found guilty of second-degree murder, maliciously discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
