A 23-year-old man from Covington, Louisiana, Santana Phillipe Elzy, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl across state borders. The sentencing took place in the U.S. District Court in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Details of the Investigation

According to court documents, the investigation into Elzy’s activities began on August 29, 2023, following a written complaint received by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The complaint alleged drug trafficking at a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Law enforcement agents conducted surveillance at the motel and identified individuals and rooms suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.

During the surveillance operation, agents observed a red Toyota Camry arriving at the motel to pick up two individuals suspected of drug selling. The agents followed the vehicle as it crossed state lines and witnessed the occupants engaging in what appeared to be a drug transaction with Santana Elzy at a Wal-Mart parking lot in Louisiana. Subsequent investigation revealed that Elzy had supplied the group with approximately 1,000 fentanyl-laced pills for distribution in the Southern District of Mississippi.

Elzy pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance on March 4, 2024. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rose, and the announcement of the sentencing was made by U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Anessa Daniels-McCaw of the DEA.

The investigation into Elzy’s activities was a collaborative effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
