MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A dramatic police chase involving Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies came to a crashing end on Wednesday, resulting in the arrest of a 21-year-old man on felony drug charges.
The incident unfolded just before 5 p.m. when deputies spotted a black Infiniti without a license plate traveling northbound on Raleigh Millington Road near Egypt Central Road. The driver of the vehicle reportedly ran a red light in the area, prompting deputies to activate their emergency lights in an effort to pull the driver over.
However, instead of complying, the driver of the Infiniti chose to evade law enforcement, leading to a high-speed pursuit. The chase continued northbound on Raleigh Millington until the driver was ultimately blocked by another deputy’s vehicle.
Undeterred, the driver made a reckless decision to drive into oncoming traffic, putting the safety of others at risk. Despite the deputies’ attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver veered off the road and navigated through a gas station parking lot, narrowly avoiding collisions with pedestrians.
The pursuit escalated further as the driver ventured off-road and ploughed through an open field before crashing into a tree line adjacent to the Allentown mobile home park on Chumbler Drive.
Following the crash, the driver, later identified as Robert Tomlinson, hastily exited the vehicle, clad only in a black t-shirt, shorts, and bare feet, before embarking on a desperate attempt to flee on foot. Tomlinson managed to evade initial capture by scaling a fence and darting into the mobile home park, prompting deputies to give chase on foot.
After a brief pursuit, Tomlinson was apprehended by law enforcement. During a subsequent search, deputies discovered multiple clear plastic bags containing marijuana in Tomlinson’s pockets. Additional bags of marijuana, along with a glass jar of THC wax, a digital scale, a marijuana grinder, and a water pipe, were found in his vehicle.
Remarkably, upon his arrest, Tomlinson expressed remorse to the deputies for his decision to flee from law enforcement.
Tomlinson now faces a litany of charges, including intentionally evading arrest in an automobile, evading arrest, possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, violation of vehicle registration law, disregarding a red light, driving left of the center of the roadway, failure to exercise due care, failure to report a vehicle accident, violation of financial law, and reckless driving.
After being released on a $15,000 bond, Tomlinson is scheduled to appear in court on July 1 to answer to the charges against him.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the consequences of engaging in illegal activities. Law enforcement officials continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of the community.
