A suspect linked to the tragic killing of a Mesquite woman in June 2023 has been apprehended, as confirmed by Sunnyvale police on Friday.
Quantavius Gomillia, a 27-year-old individual, was taken into custody in Mississippi earlier this week and subsequently transferred to Dallas County on Thursday, according to a recent Facebook post by the department. Gomillia has been charged with murder in relation to the death of 27-year-old Tyesha Merritt. Additionally, Sunnyvale police have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming concerning the injuries sustained by four other individuals in the shooting incident, including three children.
The tragic event unfolded around 6 p.m. on June 4, 2023, at a townhome complex located in the 200 block of Planters Road. While Merritt lost her life in the shooting, her brother and his three children sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the incident, a video was released showing a car pulling up to a townhome, with a man exiting the passenger side and firing multiple shots. The assailant swiftly re-enters the vehicle, which then speeds away. Meanwhile, Merritt’s brother, clad in a white shirt, can be seen fleeing the scene.
Authorities have disclosed that, based on the video evidence, a second suspect was operating the getaway vehicle. However, it remains uncertain whether this individual will face charges in connection with the shooting.
The Facebook announcement made by the police did not delve into the specifics of how Gomillia was linked to the crime or what the potential motive might have been. Chief Bill Vegas of the Sunnyvale Police Department expressed gratitude towards the investigative team for their efforts in pursuing the case and acknowledged the support extended by the Carrollton and Mesquite police departments, as well as the FBI.
As of Friday, Gomillia remains incarcerated on a bond amounting to $500,000. Information regarding legal representation for the accused party is not currently available.
