Who Is Oved Bernardo Mendoza Argueta?
Officer Anthony Alexander of the Irving Police Department reports that at around 4 p.m., authorities responded to several 911 calls regarding a gunshot incident in the Las Colinas neighborhood in the 5300 block of N. MacArthur Blvd. When police arrived, they found two individuals inside a fast-food restaurant with gunshot injuries. Both victims were unfortunately pronounced dead by EMTs shortly after.
Officer Alexander confirmed that the shooting occurred within the Chick-fil-A establishment. The Irving Police Department’s investigative team gathered substantial evidence indicating that the victims were targeted in the incident. The suspect, 37-year-old Oved Bernardo Mendoza Argueta, fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Mendoza Argueta’s wife, an employee at Chick-fil-A, witnessed the shooting and positively identified her husband as the assailant. As of 7:30 a.m. on June 27, Mendoza Argueta’s booking details revealed a hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This hold, also known as an immigration detainer, notifies federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies of ICE’s intention to take custody of an individual currently in their custody.
Who Is Bernardo Raul Castro Mata?
In a separate incident, a grand jury indicted 19-year-old Bernardo Raul Castro Mata on charges of attempted first-degree murder. Mata appeared in Queens County Criminal Court for arraignment on Wednesday. Earlier in June, Mata faced accusations of shooting two NYPD officers. His right arm was restrained to a wheelchair as he entered the courtroom.
Prosecution evidence suggested that Mata was riding a scooter against traffic on a one-way street when Officers Richard Yarusso and Christopher Abreu shot him in East Elmhurst. Court documents revealed that Mata, currently hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital after residing in a migrant shelter, confessed to being part of a gang from Venezuela.
According to Mata, firearms are smuggled into shelters disguised in food delivery parcels to bypass metal detectors. He claimed that due to frequent shootings of gang members by Venezuelan police for minor offences, it is standard practice for Tren de Aragua members to retaliate against law enforcement. Mata pleaded not guilty despite admitting the pistol was not his and malfunctioned during the police encounter.
