The accused, identified as Munmun Das, had been on the run for several years and was designated as a Proclaimed Offender (PO) before her arrest.
The CBI’s investigation into the case began on September 29, 2005, leading to the charge-sheeting of Das and 28 others. The accused woman allegedly engaged in a scheme where she would submit falsified documents to secure housing loans, ultimately defrauding banks. Specifically, she is accused of deceiving the SBI Kabardanga Road Branch in Kolkata by submitting fraudulent housing loan applications between June and August 2004. The incomplete documentation led to the sanctioning of loans, resulting in financial losses for the branch.
According to a statement released by the CBI, Das had been evading authorities since July 7, 2011. However, relentless efforts by CBI officers, including technical surveillance and source cultivation, eventually led to her arrest. Officials from the CBI highlighted the importance of these efforts in bringing the accused to justice.
Following her arrest, Munmun Das was presented before a CBI Special Court on Thursday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody until July 2. The legal proceedings against her are expected to unfold in the coming weeks as the case progresses through the judicial system.
