Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man facing charges related to sex crimes made a court appearance at Baxter County Circuit Court on Monday. Michael Anthony Smith Jr., 29, is facing similar charges in two counties. In Baxter County, he is accused of rape and false imprisonment, while in Washington County, he is charged with second-degree sexual assault and failure to appear.

Smith is scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court again on July 1 as trial dates are being coordinated with his jury trial date in Washington County, set for late November. Court documents reveal that Smith has listed multiple addresses, including references to “the streets of Columbia, Missouri.”

Reports indicate that Smith fled when he became aware of the allegations against him in Baxter County. He was later apprehended in Missouri on warrants from Washington County. It is believed that Smith had moved to Mountain Home with his girlfriend and a child, where he found employment at a local business. However, at the time of his relocation, he was already a fugitive from Washington County where he had been accused of engaging in sexual relations with an 18-year-old female in late October 2021.

Smith appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court on August 14 after being arrested on a failure to appear warrant. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was subsequently transferred to the Washington County jail the following day. Records indicate that Smith has led a transient lifestyle, reporting addresses in Mountain Home, Fayetteville, and Missouri. In the Washington County jail log, he once listed Bearden as his place of residence.

In the Baxter County case, the charges against Smith stemmed from a report made by an adult female in mid-August last year. The victim alleged that Smith, accompanied by a male friend, had forced his way into her residence and sexually assaulted her. Despite initial hesitation to report the crime due to fear of retaliation, the victim eventually cooperated with investigators.

In addition to the Baxter County charges, Smith is also facing accusations of second-degree sexual assault and failure to appear in Washington County. The incident in Washington County, which allegedly involved the same male companion present during the Baxter County assault, took place in late October 2021. Smith failed to appear in court for the Washington County charges in mid-April last year, leading to a failure-to-appear warrant being issued.

Smith was apprehended in Columbia, Missouri, on the Washington County warrants and subsequently brought back to Arkansas to face the pending charges. The legal proceedings for both cases are ongoing, with trial dates being coordinated to ensure a fair and timely resolution..
